Our latest YouTube video shows you how to craft adorable mini Christmas stockings from upcycled woollen blankets.

WOOLAMAZOOS CHRISTMAS WORKSHOPS

'Tis the season for handmade holiday magic! If you're looking for a fun, zero-waste way to add some festive flair to your tree or mantel, our latest YouTube video shows you how to craft adorable mini Christmas stockings from upcycled woollen blankets. These little gems are perfect as ornaments, gift tags, or advent calendar fillers—quick to make, customizable, and oh-so-sustainable. No sewing machine required, just basic hand-stitching and scraps you might already have (or grab from a thrift shop for under $5).

Watch the full step-by-step video below, or follow along with our written guide. It's beginner-friendly, takes about 20-30 minutes per stocking, and uses materials that keep waste out of landfills. Let's get crafting and make your holidays greener!

Materials Needed (Per Stocking)
  • Upcycled woollen blanket scraps/ woollen jumpers or any material (about 20x10 cm, in holiday colours)

  • Different colour for star or cuffs can be Felt scraps for accents

  • Embroidery thread or wool yarn (matching colors)

  • Needle and pins

  • Scissors

  • Optional: Ribbon for hanging, beads for buttons

All these are budget-friendly—most from your craft stash or a $2 op-shop find!

Step 1: Make Your Pattern

Grab brown paper or any scrap. Draw a simple stocking (about 4-5 inches tall) and a star. Cut them out. These will be your guides. Pro tip: Woolamazoo will have printable patterns on their site – easy peasy!

Step 2: Cut Your Pieces

Pick fun wool colors. Trace and cut two stocking shapes. Cut one star from contrasting fabric. Mix it up – reds, greens, whites for Christmas vibes. Show off examples: solid colors or patterns. If you're short on scraps, grab a Woolamazoo kit!

Step 3: Sew the Star (Blanket Stitch Magic)

Place the star on the front stocking piece. Think about the cuff fold – position so it peeks nicely. Pin with one pin.

Thread your needle with wool (double knot the end). Start at a star point: Come up through the star, tuck knot behind, go through stocking back. Loop back through first stitch sideways. Now, blanket stitch around: Needle through star and back (both layers), loop wool under needle, pull tight. Keep stitches even, about 1/4 inch apart.

At points, turn and continue. End by joining last stitch, knot on back (loop method: needle through loop, pull tight). Hide thread by weaving into star, snip. Boom – starry front done!

Step 4: Fold and Edge the Cuffs

Fold cuffs down evenly on front and back (same height). Pin sides. Sew each cuff edge separately with blanket stitch. Double knot, start up through fold, over and back. Edge along, knot on back (hide thread). Repeat for other side. Folds look pro now!

Step 5: Pin and Stitch the Main Body

Pin all around: front to back, edges aligned, top straight. Double knot thread. First stitch through fold and both layers, hide knot. Blanket stitch entire edge: Through both pieces, loop under needle. Trickier at folds, easier lower down.

Step 6: Add the Hanger (Crochet Loop – Optional but Cute)

Before closing top, make a hanger. Crochet chain: Circle with line, hook through, yarn over, pull loops. Chain to 3-4 inches (enough to hang and sew). Knot ends, trim tails.

Place loop at top edge, pin. Resume stitching: Go through layers and loop for strength. At top back, extra stitches through loop only (no front pierce). Knot tight on back, hide thread. Secure!

Step 7: Finish and Fill

All done! Tiny stocking ready. Fill with candy, jewelry, or perfume. Hang on tree – lasts years. Eco-win!

Pro Tip: For a woolly twist like our Woolamazoos, add a tiny pom-pom from scrap yarn. These make great gifts—pair with a MiniMazoo keychain for under $20!
